Watch The Throne Reading – April 8

A King is Coming

Read: 1 Samuel 12

Reflect: Integrity is defined as, “the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles; moral uprightness.” It is a state of being both on the inside and outside. When you speak of your values and beliefs, you also portray them by action. People learn to trust you and believe in you because you do not fall from your word.

In 1 Samuel 12, Samuel is speaking to the Israelites. He sets a king over Israel as the people have commanded. He also makes note of his dedication and loyalty to Israel. Once he has their attention, Samuel establishes their trust through a series of questions about his integrity. Samuel reviews what the Lord has done for their people. He discusses how there was a time when they turned away from the Lord. Because of their unfaithfulness, they were sold into the hand of Sisera. Now the people are scared again, as they see that Nahash king of the Ammonites is moving against them. This is why they asked for a king. They feared man instead of trusting in God to protect them, but God still gave them a king as they had asked.

Samuel is speaking to the Israelites about keeping their integrity. He advises them and their king to fear the Lord and obey him. Even though they have done evil things, the Lord still loves them. He urges them to always follow the Lord and think of the wonderful things He has done for them.

We all fall. Pride and selfishness tends to overcome us and we stray from God. But we have a wonderful God who forgives our sins and welcomes us home. He only asks for our loyalty and trust.

  • Can you think of a time when you trusted in the world instead of God? Journal about what happened.
  • What consequences did you face?
  • Do you view yourself as a person of integrity? Do others view you that way?
  • What are some ways, in your daily life, that you can be a person of integrity?

If you are in a place where you are mad or questioning God’s love for you, I encourage you to pray about that right NOW! Talk to God as you would a close friend and tell him your problems. He already knows them and wants to bring you back to him!
