The Lord Rejects Saul
Read: 1 Samuel 13-15
Reflect: So, let’s be honest here, there is a lot that happens in these three chapters. There are different battles being fought, commands being given and disobeyed, etc. We’re only going to focus on two of the events in these chapters. In 1 Samuel 13:8-10 Saul grows impatient waiting on Samuel and decides that he is going to take matters into his own hands. Saul is getting ready to give an offering to God himself, A BIG NO-NO, when Samuel shows up just in time. We will face temptation to get impatient waiting on God’s provision or think we know how to handle a situation better than God and take it into our own hands. Falling into this temptation will cause us to fall flat on our face. God knows what He has planned for you and can see a situation the whole way through when we can only see what is happening in the present.
In chapter 15 God gives Samuel very specific instructions to share with Saul which were that he was to go to war. Saul heard the specific instructions from God and chose to disobey anyways. This ultimately led to God taking him off of the throne as King. Samuel shares that God does not want our meaningless rituals; we can’t fool Him by just going through the motions. God knows our heart and wants us to listen to Him. Living in a way that honors God isn’t always the easiest choice. Being a Christ-follower is so much more than just attending church or putting a Bible verse in your social media bio. God wants us to live out our faith by obeying His commands in every situation. He gives us commands because He knows what is best for us. He loves us and wants to protect us. Saul quickly regretted not choosing to follow God’s commands. He wished he could have obeyed God in the first place. Choosing to obey Him isn’t always easy, but it is always worth it.
Are you living out your faith in all situations as God commands, or are you just going through the motions? God wants to be king of your whole life, not just your Twitter bio. In what ways can you begin to live out God’s commands in your day to day life? Take the opportunity now to surrender the situation to God. Let go of control and allow God to work it out in His timing.
