Columbus Day 3

Today was our last full day in Columbus! These students have been awesome and they have grown so much on this trip!

Today was by far the most stretching day of the trip! We spent our entire day canvassing Hilliard, inviting people to Movement, praying for them, and serving them in any way we could. There are always discouraging moments on days like these, but our students had so many amazing opportunities. Many of our students were able to invite people to Movement Church and we are hoping that we see them tomorrow or that they visit sometime in the future. We were also able to help with some odd jobs around the neighborhoods and pray with a few people that we met. We were also able to connect with a lady who was doing a bake sale in honor of her daughter who died of cancer last year. It was so neat to hear her story and our students were greatly impacted by her servants heart and her desire to help others.

We wrapped up the day with a swim at the Hilliard YMCA and a pizza picnic with Movement Church leaders. After a crazy bus ride home (check out Instagram), we settled in to hear Billy speak about purity in our lives. He talked about how we all have junk in our lives and in order to give our whole lives to God we need to get rid of that junk and realize we are beautiful and new in God’s eyes.

Tomorrow we are helping with set up at Movement Church and attending their church service. Please be praying for servants hearts and good attitudes as we are getting up very, very early! It should be a great day!

Please check Facebook, Instagram, and your email for updates about travel, departure, and arrival times. Thanks and goodnight!

Columbus Day 2

What an amazing day! Even though it was a long, hot day our middle school students were champs! We started the day by dividing into our three “street teams.” Each group had the opportunity to serve with SON ministries. This is a program in Hilliard that provides a summer program and lunch to students in need and in poverty in the area. Our first group went to Bayside apartments and hung out with kids of all ages while decorating cookies, playing 9-square, and wrapping each other up in toilet paper as snowmen. In the afternoon, the second group went to one of the local churches in the area where they ate lunch, played soccer, and made salt dough sculptures! Our third group went to another church where they pulled out the 9 square and played basketball with some of the kids. Each team also had time to spend on their devotions and worked on a photo scavenger hunt! It was great to see our students put other people’s needs above themselves. The hard part for our students today was seeing and fully understanding that there are kids who don’t have enough food and don’t have the toys and gadgets that our students do. Many of them also came to the realization that there are so many people in their own community who have the same need! It was amazing to see that lightbulb moment see their understanding. Please be praying that our students can see how they can serve the people in their community and that they don’t need a mission trip to continue what they have learned on this trip so far.

Later in the afternoon we took them to the Columbus Zoo! It was so fun to see their excitement while we were there. Billy asked them to look at families while we were at the zoo and observe how they interact. He also asked our students to meet three new people who were in their “5 foot radius.” This stretched our students but it was neat to hear their stories about conversations they had with people. We then ended our day with a great meal at Raising Cane’s!

At team time, Billy connected what they did at the zoo to their faith. He pointed out that it is our job to share God’s love with others. When we meet people we need to share God’s love with them because their eternity is impacted by that. Lastly, he had them write their stories and how their relationship with God has grown or started through events in their life.

Tomorrow we will be canvassing Hilliard and inviting people to attend Movement Church on Sunday. Please be praying for open hearts from the people we will meet. Also pray that God will give our students His love, His light, and His words tomorrow as they share his story and theirs with others. Tomorrow is a challenging day for most students, but as leaders we know that God is going to work through them and do amazing things!

Columbus Day 1

Hello from Columbus! We made it here safe and sound and had a great first day! I am always impressed with how our middle schoolers act on our mission trips and today was no exception!

Last night, we listened to Billy and Corey walk us through some mission trip training. We learned the importance if putting ourselves last and the example that we can set for others as followers of Christ. Since this is a first time thing for middle schoolers this is a big part of our night. We also threw in a little kickball with Pastor Nick and a trip to Wal-Mart! It was a busy first night, but we had a blast!

Today we woke up, loaded up, and headed down to the great city of Columbus. After unloading and eating lunch at Grace Polaris Church, we left for the Hilliard YMCA. This is where Movement Church meets on Sundays so we were able to meet Josh, the worship leader of Movement, and hear about Movement and what the Y is doing in Hilliard. Students were awesome as they pulled weeds, picked up trash, cleaned windows and walls, and put together collection boxes for the Y.

After a quick dinner at Wendy’s we went to visit a great Ohio icon…the Horseshoe. We were able to take students in so they could see where the Buckeyes play and while it was quick they thought it was awesome! We then headed to Graeter’s for a Columbus treat. Can’t visit Columbus without it! We ended the night with some 9-square and a team time with Billy.

This group of students have already stared to pull together as a team. It has been so neat to see their servants hearts and their love for God! They have been such a light and testament to those around them. I feel like a proud momma! Tomorrow…or today really…is going to be a very busy day! Please be praying for us as we work with SON ministries and for our safety as we travel around the city. Also be praying that our students have opportunities to show the love of Christ to others!
